Chelsea have been handed a tough draw in the Champions League round of 16 after it was revealed that they would face Atletico Madrid for a place in the quarterfinals of the competition. It is the one of the top two picks of the round of 16 after the drawtook place on Monday. Chelsea have a history with Atletico Madrid whom they faced in the Champions League semi-finals in 2014 and in the group stage during the 2016/17 season. Atletico Madrid eliminated Chelsea in the last four to seal a final place. They went on to lose that final to city rivals Real Madrid who won 4-1 at the end of extra time.


Blues boss Frank Lampard has made instant reaction to the Champions League draw during his pre-match press conference ahead of the Wolves game in the Premier League. Wolves play hosts to Chelsea in the first match of week 13 games at the Molineux on Tuesday.

Ahead of the game, Lampard told reporters that his team got the worst possible draw as group winners. He also praised the quality of centre back Thiago Silva and that new Blues signing can use his experience to steer the team in the right direction. Thiago Silva is the Chelsea skipper for the major games as normal skipper Cesar Azpilicueta has been displaced by young English international Reece James at right-back.

Chelsea are unbeaten in the Champions League this season after a record of four wins and two draws in Group E. The Blues won the group with 14 points ahead of Sevilla who finished in second place with 13 points. Sevilla also qualified for the round of 16 and have been drawn with Borussia Dortmund.For Atletico Madrid, the Spaniards finished in second in Group A behind leaders and holders Bayern Munich.
