Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have set their sights on Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso and they want to take the defender away from Stamford Bridge in a deal that would see him become a new La Liga player by the end of January. This is according to El Chiringuito, a Spanish TV show.

Alonso has further fallen down the pecking order at Stanford Bridge following the arrival of Ben Chilwell last summer from Leicester City. He is now behind both the English left-back and Brazilian defender Emerson Palmieri for that position and wants to seek a move away from the club to get more game time.

The Spaniard has also fallen out with the Blues manager Frank Lampard and from all indications, he is already set to make the move away. His problems started since the incident with Lampard against West Brom at the Hawthorns and since then, he has been sparingly used or selected to feature in the team sheet.

He is now being offered an escape route by Atletico who want to bring him back to Spain in a deal that is expected to favor both the player and the Spanish outfit.

Diego Someone’s Atletico Madrid side could be a great fit for Alonso, as they operate hugely with wingbacks. The 29-year-old may even just walk into the XI or be allowed to fight for his place before earning a starting spot in the team.

Atletico are currently enjoying a standout season and are the current table-toppers going into Christmas. It is the first time a team aside from Barcelona or Real Madrid will be atop the Spanish La6Liga table heading into the Christmas break since the 2006 season. They will be looking to improve the squad by bringing in reinforcements as they aim to win another league title.
