Timo Werner is in contention for the Newcastle United game in the Premier League this weekend after returning to training. The petite German had missed the slim win over English Championship club Barnsley in the FA Cup fifth round on Thursday night because of a dead leg but has recovered in time for the visit of Newcastle United in the league. Without Timo Werner, Chelsea booked their place in the FA Cup quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over their lower league opponents.

England international Tammy Abraham scored in the second half to take the Blues into the last eight, where they will face Sheffield United for the right to seal a place in the semis of the FA Cup this season. Chelsea are hoping to go one more step in the competition than last season when they were beaten finalists. Arsenal beat 10-man Chelsea 2-1 in the final of the competition at the Wembley Stadium last season to win the FA Cup for a record 14th time.

After the slender victory over Barnsley during the week, Chelsea turn attention to the Premier League and their quest to secure a Champions League place at the end of the season. Only the top four teams will play Champions League football next season via the league route and the Blues would be hoping to secure one of the four spots. Chelsea start the new set of league games in fifth place and one point off league champions Liverpool. They have the opportunity to end the weekend in the top four if Liverpool don’t pick up maximum points against fellow Champions League spot hopefuls Leicester City in the first game of the weekend. The Reds are guests of a Leicester City team in third place. Chelsea will move ahead of Liverpool on the table with a win over the Magpies at home as long as the Reds don’t record an away win at Leicester City.
